Students are given an overview of the trends towards miniaturization of passive microwave circuits and their current areas of application. First of all, the driving forces for miniaturization will be worked out and the procedure will be presented using concrete examples, taking into account the corresponding boundary conditions. The paper concludes with a presentation of current research foci and applications of such microwave circuits.
